Smile

I had the pleasure of seeing Cuban Jazz great Arturo Sandoval recently. A real joyful spirit. I love watching jazz musicians perform because they always have such a good time doing what they do. Arturo’s expertise is on the trumpet.

Included in his repertoire that evening, he sang the old Charlie Chaplin song “Smile” (music by Chaplin, words added later, and initially and famously covered by Nat King Cole).

Smile

Smile though your heart is aching

Smile even though it’s breaking.

When there are clouds in the sky

You’ll get by.

If you smile through your pain and sorrow

Smile and maybe tomorrow

You’ll see the sun come shining through

For you.

Light up your face with gladness,

Hide every trace of sadness.

Although a tear may be ever so near

That’s the time you must keep on trying

Smile, what’s the use of crying.

You’ll find that life is still worthwhile –

If you just smile.
